- また彼らに近い人々はイッサカル、ゼブルン、ナフタリなどの遠い所の者まで、ろば、らくだ、騾馬、牛などに食物を負わせて来た。すなわち麦粉の食物、干いちじく、干ぶどう、ぶどう酒、油、牛、羊などを多く携えて来た。これはイスラエルに喜びがあったからである。 (歴代志1 12:40)

If you serve food on a dish and perform Kaji (incantation) by reciting this 'Kajionjiki Dharani' (literally, incantation for food and drink), the food will become an immeasurable amount of food for all hungry ghosts to feel full enough, and immeasurable sufferings will be relieved, and you can live longer and get a certificate of Buddhism by that good deed.'
- わたしのしもべどもにそれをレバノンから海に運びおろさせましょう。わたしはそれをいかだに組んで、海路、あなたの指示される場所まで送り、そこでそれをくずしましょう。あなたはそれを受け取ってください。また、あなたはわたしの家のために食物を供給して、わたしの望みをかなえてください」。 (列王紀1 5:9)

- 仏教上における餓鬼は、生前嘘を他言した罪で燃える舌を持っており、口に入れた飲食物は炎を上げて燃え尽き飲み食いすることは出来ないが、地蔵菩薩の慈悲を通した水は餓鬼の喉にも届き、暫くの間苦しみがとぎれると言われている(その間に供養を捧げたり得の高い経文を聞かせたりして成仏を願うのが施餓鬼の法要の一端でもある)。
