- また、雄略天皇の皇女で、斎宮である栲幡姫皇女(稚足姫皇女)が、湯人(ゆえ:皇子女の沐浴等に仕える役職)の盧城部連武彦の子供を妊娠したと、阿閇氏国見に讒言され、無実を晴らすため自殺した事件が雄略天皇紀3年4月条に載っている。
- According to the April A.D. 459 part of the History of Emperor Yuryaku, Takuhatahime no Himemiko (also called Wakatarashihime no Himemiko; a daughter of the Emperor Yuryaku; Saigu (Imperial Princess appointed to serve the deities of the Ise-jingu Shrine)) got slandered by Ahe no omi, saying that she got pregnant by a yue (a bathing servant to princes and princesses), Iokibe no Muraji Takehiko, and she killed herself to prove her innocence.
- 山路愛山(彌吉)は回想録『命耶罪耶』の中で子供の頃(静岡時代)に彰常より、これからは「商人の道」を学ぶように諭された時に武士の子としての誇りから「卑しむべき商人たらんよりは寧ろ自殺するこそよけれ」と叫んだことを記している。
- Aizan (Yakichi) YAMAJI wrote the following story in his commentaries entitled 'Meikatsumika': when Akitsune tried to convince Aizan in his childhood (in Shizuoka) that he should learn 'the way of merchant' from that time on, Aizan spoke out proudly as a son of samurai family that he would rather kill himself than become a humble merchant.
- この戦いに敗れた師冬は、1350年末に鎌倉から没落して甲斐国須沢城(山梨県南アルプス市白根町)に逃れたが、そこもやがて諏訪氏の軍勢に包囲されることとなり、翌年1月17日、逃げ切れないことを悟った師冬は自殺して果てたのであった。
- Although Morofuyu left Kamakura and escaped into Susawa-jo Castle of Kai Prefecture (present-day Minami-Alps City, Yamanashi Prefecture) at the end of 1350 after the setback in the conflict, he was soon besieged by the force of the Suwa clan, giving up running away, and killed himself on February 21, 1351.

- In the 7th month of 1595, Hidetsugu was convicted of a crime, stripped of his position of Kanpaku (regent to the Emperor), and ordered to commit seppuku at Mt. Koya on the 15th day of the 7th month, which was followed by the suicide of five others including Tonomo YAMAMOTO, Sanjuro YAMADA and Bansaku FUWA, and the presentation of Hidetsugu's head to Hideyoshi for inspection in Fushimi before it was put on public display beside the Sanjo-gawa River.

- It is said that when Soncho was captured and failed to commit suicide, he shouted, 'Cut my head off now! Or, kill me with the poison that Yoshitoki's wife used!,' suggesting that Yoshitoki HOJO, then regent to the shognate, who had died three years before, was killed with poison by Iga no kata, the wife of Yoshitoki (based on the episode described in a diary of Teika FUJIWARA).

- There is an old anecdote that a woman (who was apparently a strong-willed and spirited person) working in the Shieikan dojo asked Okita to marry her but he turned down her proposal, saying 'I am still an apprentice' (the woman attempted suicide, possibly because of his rejection, and later married another man after being introduced by Kondo).

- The place called Juni Gozen is the site of the Battle of Usubagahara where Kikunomae, the lawful wife of Chikugo no kami Tokinari YAMADA, the lord of Yamada-jo Castle, and her lady attendants escaped from the pursuers and got stuck at the bluff and leaped hand in hand into the depth of Hoki-gawa River on the 15th day (error for 25th) of the 3rd month of the 13th year of the Tensho era (corresponds to April 24, 1585).
- 1524年、弟の長祗が相良長定に攻められて翌年に自殺すると、1526年に僧兵をかき集めて長定を破り、還俗して太郎長隆と名乗って相良氏の家督を継ごうとしたが、僧上がりの長隆に対して相良一族や家臣団は従おうとせず、長隆は正式に家督を継ぐこともできず、人吉城から逃亡し、永里城に入った。
- When Nagataka SAGARA's younger brother, Nagamasa was attacked by Nagasada SAGARA in 1524 and Nagamasa killed himself the next year, Nagataka gathered up monk soldiers and, with them, beat down Nagasada in 1526, after which he returned to the secular life naming himself Taro-Nagataka and tried to succeed to the headship of the Sagara family, however, the whole Sagara family and their vassal groups would not obey Nagataka who had been a priest, and Nagataka could not formally succeed to the headship of the family, thus he ran away from Hitoyoshi-jo Castle, and went to Nagasato-jo Castle.

- However, because he continued to be rebellious against Hideyoshi and also because many of his vassals participated in the uprising against Hideyoshi (Unekita-ikki) started by a vassal of the Shimazu clan, Kunikane UMEKITA, Hideyoshi became angry with Toshihisa, and this led Toshihisa to attempt suicide, however, he landed in Ryugamizu as the army of his older brother, Yoshihisa, came surrounding him.

- Well known examples include the group seppuku of Daitojuku juyonshi (14 members of Great Eastern School) committed in accordance with tradition in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo on August 25, 1945 and the seppuku of author Yukio MISHIMA on November 25, 1970 committed following a speech given at the Ichigaya Camp of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force.
- 土方から依頼されて新撰組の誠の旗をつくった染物屋の女主人を手ごめにし(女主人は恥じて自殺してしまう)、さらに罪のない職人の親方を斬り捨て、その弟子の職人たちと乱闘(大坂力士乱闘事件の改変)、あげくに親方の妹のお梅をまたも手ごめにする(お梅は発狂)など悪行をくりかえし、最後は土方と沖田たちに成敗される。
- SERIZAWA raped the female owner of the dyer who prepared the Shinsen-gumi's banner of loyalty (the owner was so ashamed that she killed herself), also slashed the master craftsman who was innocent, then scuffled with the craftsmen who were apprentices under the master (modified version of the scuffle with sumo wrestlers in Osaka), furthermore, raped Oume who was the sister of the master (Oume became insane), and continued other vicious deeds; he was eventually slashed as a punishment by HIJIKATA, OKITA and others.
- 上記の一色・土岐を暗殺した事や、比叡山の宗徒を殺しまたは焼身自殺させた事の他、権中納言・日野義資を暗殺したと思しき事、皇族・公卿ら数十人を処罰した事、「献上された梅の枝が折れた」「料理がまずい」といった些細な理由で庭師や料理人を罰した事などが『満済准后日記』『看聞日記』『薩戒記』など当時の記録にみえる。
- Records made at that time, such as the 'Mansai Junko Diary,' 'Kanmon Diary,' and 'Sakkai-Ki' mention that, as well as the assassinations of Isshiki and Toki and the killing and forced self-immolation of monks at Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple described above, he also supposedly assassinated Gon Chunagon (Provisional Middle Counselor) Yoshisuke HINO, punished dozens of members of the Imperial Family and court aristocracy, and punished gardeners and cooks for trivial reasons, such as 'a branch of the plum tree received as a gift broke' and 'the food did not taste good.'
- しかし、この書物には側室の桂岩院の出自を遊女とし、直江兼続が世継ぎを生ませる為、この遊女を男装させて景勝に引き合わせて定勝を生ませたが、この女は自分が女だと景勝に知られて怒りを買い、その寵愛を失ったことを悲観して自殺したとし、それを恨みとした定勝が兼続を自らの手で殺害するという明らかに史実と異なる記述や考証がされており、信憑性には問題がある。
- However, the credibility of this book is problematic because it contains statements and documentation obviously inconsistent with historical facts; some of these inconsistencies follow: Keigannin, Kagekatsu's concubine, was a descendent of a prostitute; Kanetsugu NAOE forced this prostitute to disguise herself as a man and introduced her to Kagekatsu so that she would bear an heir to Kagekatsu; she bore Sadakatsu, but she incurred Kagekatsu's anger because he found out that she was a woman; this woman was disappointed by the loss of Kagekatsu's favor and killed herself; her suicide caused Sadakatsu to harbor ill will against Kanetsugu, and he killed Kanetsugu in person.
- 1382年(永徳2年)4月11日に息子の後小松天皇に譲位して、上皇として院政を開始するが、義満が朝廷の事務に積極的に介入したため実権は無く、翌年には出産を終えて宮中へ戻った妃の厳子を殴打する事件や、愛妾の按察局が義満との密通を疑われて出家する事件、義満が上皇を配流するという噂が流れると、持仏堂に篭って自殺未遂を起こすなどの騒動を起こしている。
- In 1382 on April 11 he passed the throne to his son, Emperor Gokomatsu and started ruling the cloistered government, however, he did not have control of politics since Yoshimitsu was actively involved in the Imperial Palace's business, the following year incidents happened where he beat the Empress Takako after she returned to the Imperial Palace after giving birth to her child, or his favorite mistress, Azechi no Tsubone became a nun after an affair with Yoshimitsu became apparent, and rumors were spreading that Yoshimitsu tried to sentence the retired Emperor to deportation and so on, he attempted to commit suicide inside the Jibutsu-do.
- 神亀6年(729年)2月、漆部造君足(ぬりべのみやつこきみたり)と中臣宮処東人(なかとみのみやこのむらじあずまひと)が「長屋王は密かに左道を学びて国家を傾けんと欲す。」と密告があり、それをうけて藤原宇合(ふじわらのうまかい)らの率いる六衛府の軍勢が長屋王の邸宅を包囲し、舎人親王などによる糾問の結果、長屋王はその妃吉備内親王と子の膳夫王らを縊り殺させ服毒自殺した。
- Nuribe no miya tsukokimitari and Nakatomi no miya konomuraji azumahito got secret information that 'Prince Nagaya was led into the wrong course and wished to subvert the state', so the troops of rokuefu (six guard divisions) led by FUJIWARA no Umakai besieged the residence of Prince Nagaya and, as a result of inquiries by Imperial Prince Toneri and others, Prince Nagaya ordered to strangle his empress Imperial Princess Kibi and his son Kashiwade no Okimi to death and killed himself with poison.
- ところが1433年(永享5年)に比叡山が幕府に十二か条からなる要求を行い、義教は応じたものの、それにもかかわらず僧兵が暴動を起こすに至って激怒し自ら兵を率いて比叡山を攻撃、比叡山側は降伏して一旦は停戦するものの翌年には足利持氏の依頼で義教を比叡山が呪詛しているとの報を受けるに及んで再び出兵、比叡山の高僧を数人斬首するに至り、やがて 1435年(永享7年)2月には比叡山僧侶を焼身自殺に追い込んだ。
- In 1433, Yoshinori accepted 12 conditions issued by Hieizan Enryaku-ji Temple but, outraged when monks nonetheless started rioting, led his army in an attack on the temple, forcing it to surrender and accept a ceasefire; however, the following year, Yoshinori received a report from Mochiuji ASHIKAGA that the temple was placing a curse on him, leading him to again send troops and behead several high priests, and in March 1435, the temple's cornered monks immolated themselves.
