- 慶長18年(1613年)、豊臣秀頼が方広寺大仏殿を再建し、禁裏で落成の祝宴の能(庶民の拝観が許されていた)の最中に警護に当たっていた役人の只見弥五左衛門に態度を窘められたことに逆上(只見とは普段から不仲だったという)して只見を始め多くの人々を殺傷したため、駆けつけた京都所司代・板倉勝重家臣の太田兼氏に斬られた。
- In 1613, in the midst of performance of Noh play (the common men were also privileged to see) at the feast to celebrate the completion of reconstruction of the Great Buddha hall of Hoko-ji Temple held by Hideyori TOYOTOMI in the Kinri (Imperial Palace), Shigekata YOSHIOKA (who was allegedly on bad terms with Yazaemon TADAMI) was assaulted by an officer Yazaemon TADAMI who admonishing him for his attitude, and killed and wounded many persons including Tadami, before finally being killed by Kaneuji OTA who was a vassal of Katsushige ITAKURA, Kyoto shoshidai (the Kyoto deputy).
- その後、後村上天皇が摂津国の住吉大社宮司の津守氏の正印殿を約10年間、行宮(住吉行宮)とし、住吉大神を奉じる瀬戸内海の水軍を傘下にして、四国、九州との連絡網を確立し、南朝は各地で活動するが、1363年には山名氏や大内氏の北朝への帰順、楠木正儀の投降などで衰退し、拉致した三上皇を返還するなど講和的態度も示している。
- Afterwards, Emperor Gomurakami made the Shoinden (main shrine building) of the Tsumori clan, who were hereditary chief priests of the Sumiyoshi-taisha Grand Shrine in Settsu Province, his Angu (Sumiyoshi Angu), or temporary lodging especially for an Imperial visit, for about ten years and established a contact route with Shikokua and Kyushu because he held control of the naval forces in the Seto Inland Sea, who worshiped the Sumiyoshi Gods, leading to activities of the Southern Court in various places, but the betrayal of the Yamana clan and Ouchi clan to the Northern Court and the surrender of Masanori KUSUNOKI in 1363 led to its decline and it started to show a shift towards a peaceful stance by returning the three retired emperors.

- In imposing disciplinary punishments, the warden of the penal institution shall take into consideration such conditions with regard to the inmate who committed the act based on which disciplinary punishments are to be imposed (hereinafter referred to as 'disciplinary offense') as the age, mental and physical conditions, and behavior of the inmate, as well as the nature, gravity, and motive of the disciplinary offense, and the impact which the disciplinary offense has imposed on the administration of the penal institution, the inmate's attitude after the disciplinary offense, and, in cases of a sentenced person, the impact which the disciplinary punishments imposes on his/her prospective reformation and rehabilitation.
- いっぽう幕権強化・雄藩連合などの様々な思惑を孕みつつ、文久3年12月に徳川慶喜・松平春嶽・松平容保・伊達宗城(宇和島藩主)・島津久光による参預会議が開催され、神奈川鎖港談判、長州藩の処置、大坂港の防備強化などの議題が話し合われたが、将軍後見職の徳川慶喜の非協力的態度に春嶽・久光らが反撥して帰国したため、早くも翌年3月には崩壊。
- Leaving various ideas, such as reinforcing the power of the bakufu, and the alliance of major clans, as they were, a council meeting was held on December 1863 by Yoshinobu TOKUGAWA, Shungaku MATSUDAIRA, Katamori MATSUDAIRA, Munenari DATE (the lord of Uwajima clan), and Hisamitsu SHIMAZU to discuss the condition of the port of Kanagawa, the treatment of the Choshu clan, and strengthening the defences of the port of Osaka, but it failed as early as in March 1864, when Shungaku and Hisamitsu became upset with Yoshino TOKUGAWA, a guardian of the shogun, who was not cooperative at all.
- 例えば、恋人として付き合った結果としてお互いの長所も短所も好ましい性質と感じて結婚に至ったり、どうも所定の上司の前で緊張してしまって良い結果が出せず叱られてばかりだとか、所定の部下に対してだけ態度に不満があって強く注意してしまいがちだとか、あるいはあの同僚とは一緒に話していても楽しくないが、別の同僚とは話が弾む...などである。
- For example, as a result of getting to know each other as lovers, two people consider themselves compatible by taking into account both the good and bad qualities in each other and decide to get married; or one always gets nervous in front of a certain boss, and because of it, cannot bring a good result and gets scolded all the time; or one cannot help reprimanding a certain subordinate because of his/her attitude; or one always has great conversations with a certain co-worker, but not with another.
- 仁治3年(1242年)に四条天皇が崩御したため、順徳天皇の皇子・忠成王が新たな天皇として擁立されようとしていたが、泰時は父の順徳天皇がかつて承久の乱を主導した首謀者の一人であることからこれに強く反対し、忠成王即位が実現するならば退位を強行させるという態度をとり、貴族達の不満と反対を押し切って後嵯峨天皇を新たな天皇として即位させた。
- Because Emperor Shijo had died in 1242, a prince of Emperor Juntoku, Chuseio, was to be enthroned as the new Emperor; however, Yasutoki strongly objected to this because the father, the Emperor Juntoku, had been a leader in the Jokyu War, and Yasutoki took an attitude that he would compel Chuseio to abdicate if his enthronement was realized; therefore, Yasutoki forcibly enthroned the new Emperor Gosaga against the complaints and opposition of the court nobles.
- 後年、勝海舟は「(西郷の)部下にも、桐野とか村田とかいうのは、なかなか俊才であった」(『氷川清話』)、大隈重信は「西南の役に大西郷に次いでの薩摩の驍将桐野利秋、彼はすこぶる才幹の男であったが、これがやはり派手であった。身体も大きくて立派なら容貌態度ともに優れた男であったが、着物をぶざまに着るようなまねはせず、それも汚れ目の見えぬきれいな物づくめであった」(『早稲田清話』)と評している。
- In later years Kaishu KATSU commented, 'Among Saigo's men, Kirino and Murata had an exceptional talent' (in 'Kaishu's Talks at the Hikawa Mansion' [Hikawa Seiwa]), while Shigenobu OKUMA talked, 'Concerning Toshiaki KIRINO who was a formidable leader of Satsuma next to Saigo in the Seinan War, he was a very capable man and also gaudy. He had a large and splendid body as well as splendid appearance and attitude, and he never wore kimono awkwardly and all of his clothes were very clean without any dirtiness' ('Shibenobu's Talks in Waseda' [Waseda Seiwa]).
- ところで、あなた方は、こんな寂しいところで、ゆううつな木陰のしたで、時間を無駄に過ごしておられますが、もしかして昔はいい身分のお方であったのなら、教会の鳴らす鐘が聞こえるところにお住まいだった[#注6]方々であったのなら、立派なお人の宴会に出席したことがあったのでしたら、まぶたから涙を拭ったことがあったのでしたら、人をあわれんだりあわれまれたりすることがどういうことか知っておられるのでしたら、穏やかな言葉があなた方を動かして、私に人間らしい態度を示していただけますようにお願いいたします!」
- but whatever men you are that in this desert, under the shade of melancholy boughs, lose and neglect the creeping hours of time, if ever you have looked on better days, if ever you have been where bells have knolled to church, if you have ever sat at any good man's feast, if ever from your eyelids you have wiped a tear and know what it is to pity or be pitied, may gentle speeches now move you to do me human courtesy!'
