- Another evaluation, typified by Tetsuro WATSUJI, argues that Japan fell behind the global current because of its inability to introduce technology and culture similar to what was being developed during the Industrial Revolution in Europe (later in the United States as well) due to its prohibition on exchanging with other countries; this not only resulted in the failure of Japan to make a scientific culture permeate throughout the nation (science courses were disregarded), but also became an underlying cause of defeat in the Pacific War.
- When various arts became systematized from the middle ages to the early modern period, it started to take on more meanings, not simply meaning system of performing arts and techniques, but also including ideas and philosophical backgrounds of arts, and the issue of how these metaphysical problems could be used in ascetic practice and daily life to heighten one's own art, leading to the establishment of the concept of geido.

- The overall design philosophy for ITER has been to use established approaches and to validate their application through wide-ranging physics and engineering work. This included detailed analyses, experiments in existing fusion research facilities, and dedicated technology developments including fabrication and test of full scale or scalable models of key components [4]. Unavoidable uncertainties remain in the extrapolation of performance from current experience to the ITER size and parameters; these can only be fully resolved through experiments at ITER scale.
